Ainsworth Scott Founder of Olympia Gallery
Ainsworth David Scott was born in Kingston on January 27, 1912. He attended the Kingston College and later studied civil engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
In 1945, Scott returned to Jamaica and played a key role in the construction of the University of the West Indies.
Throughout his professional life, Scott passionately championed the development of Jamaican visual arts culture.
He firmly believed that the arts should be integrated within the business community and be a path to cultural development.
As a leading patron of the arts, Scott accumulated the largest comprehensive collection of artworks from various traditional and contemporary Jamaican artists.
He also became the Chairman of the Contemporary Jamaican Artists Association during the early sixties to mid-seventies.
Scott established the Olympia International Art Centre (now known as The Art Centre/Olympia Gallery) in 1974 where an active programme of art exhibitions and other cultural events were maintained.
