Thorold DeMercado
Thorold DeMercado was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1948, where he lived until 1968-71 when he left to attend Pel’s School of Art in New York. There he majored in Commercial Art and Graphic Design. Thorold's professional career included working with the Jamaica Daily News between 1973-81 as an editorial designer and later with the Jamaican Observer newspaper as the senior sub-editor. He also worked with Financial Times in London for seven years as a production editor. After retiring in 2012.
Thorold restarted his painting career and held solo exhibitions in Jamaica. Inspired by the natural beauty of Jamaica’s land and seascapes, his paintings capture these scenes, as well as old buildings that are fast disappearing. Thorold's faith also influences his art, and he has been exploring Arabic calligraphy recently. He continued his studies into Arabic calligraphy and here produce a few pieces which include copies of works done by masters in the craft.
